The Science of Reading

Fifty Years of Research and What We Have Learned

This presentation provides an overview of the science of reading. The science of reading draws upon research from various disciplines. Informed by this research, we now understand quite a lot about how the brain learns to read, why so many students struggle, and effective reading instruction.

Reading Instruction in the Primary Grades

The Science of Reading in Action

Students who do not develop adequate foundational reading skills in the early grades are likely to have reading difficulties throughout their school careers. Fortunately, the field has strong evidence regarding what we should teach in the primary grades and how we should teach it to support all students in their early reading development.

Intervention in the Intermediate Grades

The Science of Reading in Action

Many students in grades 4-8 have reading difficulties; they may struggle with word identification, word and world knowledge, reading fluency, and/or reading comprehension. Although the research evidence pertaining to effective intervention for older students is still evolving, research has provided valuable insights into instruction for these students.

Teaching Students with ADHD and Reading Difficulties

The Science of Reading in Action

Students who have both ADHD and reading difficulties or disabilities (including dyslexia) are uniquely at risk for a variety of negative educational and life consequences. In this presentation Dr. Denton will describe the current scientific understanding of ADHD, the treatment of ADHD, and reading interventions for students with ADHD. She will conclude with practical advice on adapting instruction to promote success for these students.

Adapting Evidence-Based Reading Instruction

Supporting Success For All Students

The Science of Reading has demonstrated characteristics of effective instruction for students with reading difficulties; however, not all students respond in the same way, even when they are provided with high-quality reading instruction. In this session, Dr. Denton will demonstrate how teachers can adapt their reading instruction in various ways to help more of their students become successful readers.

Explicit Reading Instruction In The Primary Grades

Avoiding Four Common Problems

Explicit instruction is purposeful and direct; students are not asked to infer information. Reading intervention programs based on the science of reading guide teachers to provide explicit instruction, but these programs must be thoughtfully implemented by teachers. Through her 20+ years as a reading scientist developing and testing reading interventions, Dr. Denton has observed four common mistakes and pitfalls that have kept students from making sufficient progress in explicit reading programs. This session will describe these common problems and how they can be avoided.
