Implementing the science of reading.

Educational consultant and reading scientist specializing in reading interventions for students with reading difficulties and disabilities and students with ADHD.

About Carolyn

For over 20 years, Dr. Denton collaborated on scientific research in which she developed and evaluated reading interventions for students with or at-risk for reading difficulties and disabilities.

This research was conducted in authentic school settings, and the goal was to learn more about how the science of reading could be implemented in schools to help teachers and students succeed.

Prior to receiving her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Dr. Denton was a classroom teacher and reading interventionist, and she specializes in communicating with teachers and administrators to help them understand and implement the science of reading in classrooms.

Now, Dr. Denton offers consulting services, including keynotes, presentations, and workshops to assist schools as they work toward implementation of the science of reading to support reading success for their students.

Areas of Expertise

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a language-based reading disability that results in difficulties with reading and spelling single words. The good news is that students with dyslexia can learn to read when provided with effective instruction! With early intervention in the primary grades, the severity of dyslexia can be reduced.

Dr. Denton’s work has focused on instructional interventions for the prevention and remediation of reading difficulties, including dyslexia.

ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurologically-based condition that results in difficulties with self-control. People with ADHD have significant differences in the size and function of brain areas that affect self-regulation, resulting in problems controlling their own thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Many students with ADHD struggle with word reading, reading fluency, and/or reading comprehension. Dr. Denton’s expertise is in the area of interventions for students who have both ADHD and reading difficulties

Reading Intervention

Almost all students can learn to read if they are provided with effective reading instruction. Some students require supplemental intervention in addition to quality classroom reading instruction.

The science of reading has demonstrated the characteristics of effective instruction, and Dr. Denton’s work has focused on implementing this effective instruction in schools in the primary and intermediate grades.

Consulting Services

Dr. Denton provides consulting services to state departments of education, school districts, and other agencies to promote reading success for all students. Dr. Denton offers keynote presentations, professional development sessions, and extended workshops, all grounded in the science of reading.

She also offers consultation meetings with schools and districts to help them implement evidence-based practices. These may include observations of reading instruction and/or intervention lessons with feedback for teachers and administrators.
